چکیده

Biomarkers have become essential tools for proper diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of illnesses, including cancer, diabetes, and infectious diseases. The growing need for rigorous evaluation of new biomarkers for medical practice has spurred the development and characterization of statistical methods for diagnostic accuracy. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is the standard analytical tool for evaluating diagnostic tests. However, recent studies suggest widespread use of inappropriate statistical methods for ROC analysis. In addition, while enhancements in SAS 9.2 have greatly simplified basic ROC analysis for SAS users, many common ROC techniques still require extensive additional programming for SAS users. This paper provides an overview of statistical methods for evaluating continuous biomarkers using ROC analysis. For each statistical technique, existing tools available in SAS for performing the task are described, with particular emphasis on methods not addressed in previous SAS papers. The paper also introduces new features for ROC analysis that are now available as a standard component of the LOGISTIC procedure in SAS 9.2. Statistical techniques addressed in the paper include the comparison of the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of two or more biomarkers and the generation of confidence intervals for sensitivity given fixed specificity. Pancreatic cancer data (Wieand et al. 1989) that have been widely used as sample data in statistical literature are used in this paper to illustrate the application of statistical concepts.

Getting from SAS 9.1.3 to SAS 9.2: Migration Tools or Promotion Tools

If you are running a metadata server in your SAS ® 9.1.3 environment, you must upgrade your metadata when you move to SAS ® 9.2. There are two possible approaches to take. The first approach is a migration, which will essentially copy your SAS 9.1.3 environment over to SAS 9.2 as part of your SAS 9.2 installation process. The second approach is to make a fresh start by installing SAS 9.2 first,...

Biomonitoring the skeletal muscle metabolic dysfunction in knee osteoarthritis in older adults: Is Jumpstart Nutrition® Supplementation effective?

Background: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Jumpstart Nutrition® dietary supplement (JNDS) for enhancing the skeletal muscle metabolism and function of older adults with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by evaluating the biomarkers of aberrant levels of serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), C-reactive protein (CRP), creatine kinase-muscle (CK-MM), and aldol...

Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve Analysis for Medical Diagnostic Test Evaluation

This review provides the basic principle and rational for ROC analysis of rating and continuous diagnostic test results versus a gold standard. Derived indexes of accuracy, in particular area under the curve (AUC) has a meaningful interpretation for disease classification from healthy subjects. The methods of estimate of AUC and its testing in single diagnostic test and also comparative studies...

Application of adjusted-receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in combination of biomarkers for early detection of gestational diabetes mellitus

Introduction: In medical diagnostic field, evaluation of diagnostic accuracy of biomarkers or tests has always been a matter of concern. In some situations, one biomarker alone may not be sufficiently sensitive and specific for prediction of a disease. However, combining multiple biomarkers may lead to better diagnostic.  The aim of this study was to assess the performance of combination of bio...

Evaluation and Ranking of Discrete Simulation Tools

In studying through simulation, choosing an appropriate tool/language would be a difficult task because many of them are available. On the other hand, few research works focus on evaluation of simulation tools/languages and their comparison. This paper makes a couple of evaluations and ranks more than fifty simulation tools that are currently available. The first evaluation and ranking is in th...
